Scott Boras has negotiated many of baseball’s richest contracts and this winter he’ll likely secure the highest salary ever in American team sports for Alex Rodriguez. But who is Scott Boras? In the October 29 issue of The New Yorker, Ben McGrath seeks to answer that question and in this conversation he relays some of what he found.
“He’s kind of a charmingly cocky guy,” McGrath says. “What he likes to do is almost lecture about the way things work and I think he likes to have people around him who want to listen and look up to him. The players he has the best relationships with are the players who are apt to sit there and listen to him.”
What makes Boras so good?
“I think every single person began with saying, ‘Well first of all he’s very well prepared.’ If you think about it, that’s kind of a weird thing to say because it doesn’t say much about the industry,” McGrath says. “It’s a strange way to begin to explain why someone is possibly the best in an industry at what he does.”
