It's a small world (until you drive it)

My neighborhood FedEx man tells a great story of making repeated deliveries to a certain Upper West Sider. One day he asked her out. Some years later they married.

My story isn’t that good.

But it also follows the arc of a professional meeting leading to a major life change. And there is driving involved.

Sixteen months ago I traded e-mails with Steve Shoppman as he prepared for an ambitious around-the-world trip and I put the finishing touches on a documentary about mine. (That’s Shoppman on the right with travel companion Steve Bouey in Fiji). We stayed in touch as his The World by Road project progressed and a few weeks ago we arranged to speak for The Interviewpoint. The conversation is featured on the site this week.

But after we turned off the cameras we spoke more seriously about a rendezvous and in a happy turn of events the stars have aligned. In February I’ll be joining the World by Road crew for the African leg of their journey, crossing from Spain into Morocco and driving all the way down to South Africa over the span of about 100 days.

What this means for The Interviewpoint is unclear, but certainly it will mean less frequent posts and more lengthy hiatuses. But there will be great stories in these coming months and however they’re told and wherever they’re housed, I hope you come back to find them.
